Shakira fan-made videos

Jackie at the Church of the Customer blog writes about a Shakira video that was constructed at least partially from 10,000 short videos uploaded by fans through Yahoo!.....  The song went to #1....more than a coincidence?

Customer-made, generation-c

Trendwatching.com is a consumer trends firm, doing their best to spot trends early.  Some of the trends they are tracking relate directly to the remix culture.  For example, they have dubbed those who enjoy creating new content GENERATION C.  From the article:

The GENERATION C phenomenon captures the an avalanche of consumer generated 'content' that is building on the Web, adding tera-peta bytes of new text, images, audio and video on an ongoing basis.

Taking that the next step further, they also talk about a Customer-Made trend, where customers create advertising, new products, etc.  Again, from their site:

The phenomenon of corporations creating goods, services and experiences in close cooperation with experienced and creative consumers, tapping into their intellectual capital, and in exchange giving them a direct say in (and rewarding them for) what actually gets produced, manufactured, developed, designed, serviced, or processed.

Certainly as the tools getting less expensive and easier to use, the latent desire to create stuff has an easier outlet.  As the blogosphere repeats: it's the conversation.  Making products in cooperation with your supplier seems like one of the deepest forms of conversation, eh?

TechCrunch bets against Google video ads

Over at TechCrunch, Michael Arrington doesn't think much of the proposed video ads from Google.  He has 6 reasons:

  • Google isn't using it themselves
  • Video click doesn't go to a website
  • Small businesses already can use SpotRunner instead for TV ads
  • People don't want to click on video ads
  • Creating video ads is too much work/too expensive
  • The above will cause low PPC and click thru rates

He predicts a fade into obscurity.

The Grey Video

Jim's previous post reminded me of the great grey video for the encore remix by Danger Mouse. And if you're unaware of his latest project, Danger Mouse is one half of Gnarls Barkley along with vocalist Cee-Lo. The whole album is fantastic. Also check out the "original" music video for Crazy. Animated ink blots. So cool.
